rear suspension noise
Where I live there are lots of huge diagonal speed bumps. Since they are diagonal, each corner goes over seperately. When the right rear goes over the speed bump, it makes a "clunk" or creaking noise noise. This isn't an extremely loud noise where it sounds like something is getting ready to come apart, but it is there. Shocks and subframe bushings have been replaced. What in the rear suspension could make such a noise? I did a search and only found info on front suspension.
One more noise: This one is a bit more mysterious. Not really sure where exactly it is coming from. It is a constant tapping noise....the best I can do it that I think it is coming from in front of me. I can only hear it when standing still or going very slow...might still be there while driving and just can't hear it. Opening the door makes no difference in volume or frequency...makes me think it is coming from inside, under the dash perhaps. Anyone want to take a shot at this one?? |
Rear suspension noise like that would probably be sway bar links.

Tapping is likely a lifter
The constant tapping is probably a lifter.

Sway bar links...as in the sway bar bushings or is that something else?
As far as the tapping noise....I don't think it is a lifter. The sounds does not get louder when I open the door...which I think it would if it was coming from the engine. Also, I hear nothing unusual when standing over the running engine. It's just kinda hard to describe this noise. It's not a tick, like a lifter. Use one of your knuckles and tap it against a table....that's pretty close to what it sounds like. Probably at a rate of maybe 2 taps per second. And nothing that I really do changes the noise. Rolling, standing still, braking...so on. This is a tough one! |
The Sway bars in the rear have links that run from their ends to the subframe, check them for wear. Also check the bushings.

Thanks yal, I'll do that. Now for that tapping noise....

my girlfriends e420 1994 has the same tapping noise. I thought it might be a relay switching on when the cars fan is about to turn on. I'm still not sure. Currently there is a problem with her vaccuum system.

My w126 makes the same noise in the rear right. Sometimes only when you go over a "soft" bump in the road. It is a clunk. Have no idea what it could be, everything appears in good shape. Maybe a broken coil?

It is a very softened tapping sound- almost a light "thump"

I vote for sway bar links. Inexpensive parts and easy repair. Mine started just after i got the 560, and it sounded like a serious rear end problem. The links cured it.
