I thought I'd read recently that oil such as Pennzoil Long Life 15w-40 is preferred for general use within the specified heat range. The folks at the store expressed that oil is intended only for use in Diesel engines. Any clarification would be appreciated. I looked for previous posts but couldn't find the reference….

I've been using it in my 500 SEL for as long as I've owned the car (since July 1996). This is the oil that the independent dealer that services my car here in southeastern VA recommends, and I've followed his advice. The previous owner did the same.

tracy,

I've seen some opinions that this will foul spark plugs in a gas engine and plug up cats. I have my doubts about this. This is what they term Universal grade oil. I've used universal grade in everything I own from diesel trucks, tractors, cars, and gas trucks, cars and lawn mowers for about ten years.

The thing to watch is the certification classifications. Those beginning with C, such as CE etc. are for compression ignited engines and the classifications beginning with S (SF, SG, etc) are for spark ignited engines. See that it has the latest S classification, pour it in, change it often, and sleep well.

Good luck,
