Tilt Steering Wheel - Won't Tilt
 

I have a 1995 SL 500. The steering wheel has an electronic telescoping function and an electronic tilt function. The telescoping function works fine. The formerly functioning tilt function does not. When I toggle the switch to activate the tilt function, the motor clicks, but will not activate. Are there two separate motors for the steering wheel mechanism, one for the tilt and one for the telescoping functin? What would be a likely fix to this problem? Thanks. Dell

I spent a few hours (4+) under my dash figuring out where the coupling was, R&I the new one. My column had gotten stuck fully up. The telescoping feature functioned.

The motor whirred whenever I opened the door, as it tried to raise the wheel from the driving position and closed the door as it tried to lower the wheel to the driving position I had saved. I could also make it spin with the manual control. So I heard it spin, it didn't just "click."

I tried to find details on youtube but it was woefully lacking. In fact one post suggested the only way to reach the motor was to remove the console, cd player, virtually the entire center panels of the dash and through the side over the hump. Absurd.

Another prescribed removing the driver lower dash. Naw.

One seemed reasonable which said his local wrench lie underneath the column and spent maybe half an hour replacing the part that he could touch with his hand. ***THAT sounded like a benz guy***

Two motors are present, one for telescoping, one for tilt. Since I heard whirring I went to benz and bought the nylon coupling for about $10 U.S.

I first looked underneath and couldn't see a way. I pulled the cluster and found absolutely no way, the top column housing was flat and all-encompassing, period. Besides, the motor would be found situated on the bottom where it should be.

Back under I went and eventually by making the motor spin and listening found it buried away from sight but physically easily accessible albeit super uncomfortable. Holding one's arms overhead for extended periods and some bolts were difficult to reinstall. Get a 2x4" board to hold the column up during reassembly. Or maybe velcro straps around the column and attached to the hand-hold would keep the unit up easing fatigue.
