What is the recommended mileage interval for valve adjustments on my 350 SDL?

I believe all the diesels from 1987 on had hydraulic lifters, eliminating the need for 10,000 mile adjustments.

Only had the car for a year now. I wasn't sure whether hydraulic valves needed adjustment. Learn something everyday, I guess.

No adjustment needed. The others were needed at 15k.
If you have not had the EGR blocked, do so now or the carbon will kill the engine. You can search for this using the search feature.

Benzmac, was that EGR problem fixed in the OM606, or I should I be concerned? Not that you would advise anyone to alter their emissions equipment.

P.S. With the sale of the 300E and trade of the 190E for the Jetta, I'll soon be back down to 1 Benz. Ahhh, but what a car!

EGR is blocked. I haven't noticed any change in performance or fuel economy though. Should I or is this a myth perpetrated by older deisel owners?

I think the reason for block the EGR valve is to prevent the carbon build up in the intake. This build up can cause air flow or bent rod problems. To be or not to be, search the forum for the related subject to make your own judgement call.

All 60x engines, started as early as 1984 on 190D, do not need valve adjustments. Correct me if I am wrong.

In the area of warnings!

The OM606 motor has a nasty little problem that can occur when changing oil.

The oil that is being added must be added towards the front of motor (to go down the timing chain cavity. If directed towards the back and delivered with enough velocity (usually with pumped oil like at quik lubes) the oil will accumulate till the level reaches the metered oriface (crankcase vent to intake). The oil will flow from the head into the intake and hydro-lock the motor on starting. A number of rods have been bent from this.

Its possible that MB has redesigned this on later engines as they are well aware of it.

do you have to block the egr on a 1984 300d too?????

Steve - Thanks for the tip on adding oil! The only people who add oil to that car are the dealer tech and myself, but still good to know. I also supply my own oil for dealer service, so it is never pumped in.

But the question remains about the EGR. Should I be concerned? I've also seen this mentioned on a VW TDI forum - that the EGR causes the intercooler to get gummed up. Any thoughts?
