I just received my car back from the mechanic's after having him do his best to adjust the idle (which subsequently has been troublesome since the day I bought the car)

I had recently changed the cap and rotor, wires, plugs and points, and had the carb rebuilt a while ago.

I must say it's never run smoother, except now, it has a run on after I place it in park and shut it off.

I'm afraid to touch anything as the car is finally idling well, but I'm concerned with this new problem.

Is it serious? Should I do anything about it soon? So far I've just been turning off the car in drive and then putting it in park after it is off.

Hope someone can shed some light on my situation.

I betcha the timing is a bit too advanced. Sometimes this can smooth out a rough idle but it can also cause dieseling, especially if you didn't have this problem before.

Lousy gas can do this too. Also, if you haven't taken it out on the freeway for a while, it might be time to 'air things out' a little. Or, you could have some gas dribbling in the carb when it isn't supposed to.
The first two are easier than the last one.

The Stromberg carburator has a fuel shut off solenoid designed specifically to make run - on (dieseling) impossible. The solenoid is the large electric device coming off the bottom of the float bowl.

The valve is powered up for something like 5 seconds after shut-off. I would look for a disconnected wire (the solenoid is turned to adjust basic mixture - it is the base for the main jet). I would also check the fuses. I repeat that the valve is powered closed unlike many anti-diesel fuel shut offs that are powered while running and shut off with the key.

Just a short comment, run-on can also be caused by too hot spark plugs. Might be worth double checking the suitability of your recently changed plugs. This type of error can damage the engine.
My guess is the bad gas/advanced timing.

All stromberg owners who do not know this, there is a wire that goes to the bottom of your carb. Mine was found in a ball of garbage and oil under the air filter box.

Yours is most likely there also. When mechanics adjust the CO mixture without disconnecting the wire it eventualy breaks at the carb base and coils up and hides.

I found mine and my problem was fixed. Now if I can ever find the hidden vacuum leaks I may have a nice driving car.:confused:

I hate this darn carb. It is not for the average backyard mechanic.
