96 C220 auto transmission fluid type?
 

What type (Dexron III maybe)of auto trans fluid does a 1996 C220 take? I looked in the owners manual but it only shows the amount of fluid.

The ATF for your car is DEXRON III and your automatic transmission is 722.4.

For all 1997 and later MB cars with automatic transmission 722.6, the ATF must be a special Mercedes-Benz synthetic ATF that you can only buy at MB dealers and nowhere else. Changing special ATF on 722.6 requires a special dipstick and computer-based monitor to measure the actual ATF temperature. Therefore, changing ATF on 722.6 auto transmission is only recommended to be performed by a MB dealer.

if you're interested MB also makes a "special" atf fluid for a variety of different complaints, pretty sure it's for the .4's and .5s? but if you're really interested i could figure exactly which one and a part # on monday.
