The exterior lamp out warning light works on resistance changes. Some things can happen other than a burn out or removal to trigger the light:

If any exterior bulbs have been replaced with other than exact spec replacement bulbs that can cause the light to show.

Or you may have a bulb about to burn out. Any bulbs look extra bright?

Possibly a bulb has a corroded contact, causing a resistance change sufficient to trigger the warning light, but not enough to notice a change in the light output.

There may be other problems with the 90's cars that I am not aware of, but hope this sheds some additional light on the subject.

The light out indicator came on after the tail light problem. During the attempt to fix, you swapped bulbs with the left side and back again didn't you? Maybe one of those bulbs isn't making solid contact, thus giving you the light out indicator.

Be sure to look at the tag lights...They will give fits. Also we see many people use aftermarket bulbs. The control unit sees a different amperage draw from the OE and the aftermarket and the light comes on.

I got the replacement bulbs from the local MB dealership; the replacement bulb did have a diffrent shape but the specs were the same as the old one. I can't find any lights at all, even the tag lights, that are out. I have checked all of the connections and they appear to be in order. I am taking my car in for it's 65k check-up this week so I'll have the mechanic look at it. Thanks!

Check that silly stop light in the rear window. If that's out, it will light up your indicator.

jeffsr,
Your description of those...silly stop light in the rear window.....

Not sure how you see them old mate , but I think they're great....

If you drive 2 to 3 cars ahead, you can see how far ahead cars are braking....

Makes sense to me....

Silly refers to the fact that a lot of folks overlook that "silly" bulb in the 3rd stoplight when they are trying to figure out why the bulb failure circuit remains activated. Personally, I think that it should be even higher on the body of the car, like the back edge of the roof...

If it is a brake light related problem, the indicator light is on only after the brake is applied. I think you can narrow down the problem area by turning on the lights one area at a time to see which area causes the indicator light to be on: brake lights, head lights, left parking lights, right parking lights, all parking lights, etc. This is just a theory based on the circuit from my memory. If I am wrong, I am possibly not too far off.
