When was the 722.6 sorted out?
Someone aked me this question, and I don't know the answer. I know that 1997 and 1998 model years have some problems with 722.6 five speeds, but I am not sure if 1999's are also experiencing some difficulties. I think in 2000 they switched to the touch-shift style shifter and that there are tranny upgrades that came with it.
Someone was looking at a used 99 E320 wagon and I can't think of any potential problems other than the crank balancer and usual W210 interior bits. |
John,
The 722.6 transmissions got much better around 6/98. Much improved valve bodies & clutch drum support bearing. The 4 cylinder cars didn't get modified clutch drum support. Properly serviced 722.6 transmissions(later versions or modified early ones) should make 250K miles w/o needing overhaul!! |
Thanks!

My 99 had to have a controller replacement early on. Hard to remember for sure, but I think they might have even done it twice. The transmission was completely rebuilt by the dealer at 80K miles. Diagnosis was "clutch packs out of spec."

From my experience the "updates" were the results of one too many cups of coffee being spilled into the shifter. :D
The shifter is also a control unit in its own right. Up to mid 98 the .6 had a bushing style center support and light duty freewheels. Both would fail, the freewheels were upgraded to the M120 parts (along with a few other bits) and the input shaft center support was upgraded to a roller bearing setup. The valvebodys underwent many revisions as did the ETC.6 ecu's. Joe |
What, someone sorted out the 722.6 and didn't tell me?:p

So all 2000 and up 722.6 units pretty much have all of the revisions and updates that make the current units stronger/more reliable than the early 722.6 units?
The reason I ask is because of the statement by blackmercedes that: "I think in 2000 they switched to the touch-shift style shifter and that there are tranny upgrades that came with it." |

Hello?
So were there no additional issues with the 722.6 that came about with the touchshift in 2000? Was everything pretty much sorted out around 6/98 like was stated in a previous post? |
