Injection timer

I am trouble shooting my 300td that wont start. and have a question . I have a round ,blackplug in /port on the drivers side firewall with a white line going from this to what appears to be a diagnostic sensor the wire is damaged will this effect the engine timeing or is it just for diagnostic purposes?
