The starting hesitation appears to be from a faulty glow plug-#4. The mechanic at one shop indicated it would take approx. 2 hours whereas the dealer indicated at least 3.5 hrs. Who should I believe and does anyone have an indication as to why the plug would go?

That sounds high to me. I would charge less for the same repair. If one is the fault, why not replace that one?

I'd find an honest mechanic who will replace the faulty plug for less than one hour labor.

The mechanic that determined that it was number four plug is only installing the one-but two hours?

I replaced all 4 glow plugs on a 220d. Took about 45 minutes because I had never done it.
I can see a one hour minimum labor rate.
The shop owner has bills to pay, and one hour would be fair.

What year and model? I replaced the glow plugs a few months ago,on a 95 E300 diesel(If I remember correctly)and had to remove the intake manifold to get to them.In this case 2 hrs. sounds about right. However if its an 80's model, 30-45 min. is all it takes.

Beatle Juice,
I have a 1991 300D and was wondering if your injectors are very audible? I ran some diesel purge through them and it did quiet it down, now I just pour a bottle of ATF in the dank and it seems to work well.
Do you have a repair manual?

Benzmac 05-31-2000 09:22 PM

We have the repair manuals in CD rom form in partsshop for the 124...

And you are right, if it is a late 95, IT is a couple of hours unless it is #1. You can do it in place.

Benzmac,
Is your CD specifically for the 1990-1993 300D 2.5? A friend of mine has the CD for the 1986-1989 300D and I was not happy with it, due to the fact that the cars are similar in many ways, but at the same time they are very different. What is the price.
:0 :)

Take a look in the Do It Yourself section of MercedesShop. There is a page that shows what the CD's cover. The W124 CD includes all of the W124's that were imported into the US. For pricing go to the PartsShop Lobby and click on the W124 CD.
