This is a continuation if a thread under "hot rods." Maybe we need tech help.

Some of us with various models and ages of MBs get flapping hoods at higher speeds. My 86 560SL hood starts to boogy at regular highway speed. At first I thought my hood was unlatched and held only by the safety catch, but it latches securely. Is there an adjustment? Could it involve the little rubber wedges about a third of the way along the hood opening?

I have the same problem...560SL...and the wobble, while not alarming, is certainly noticeable, and mildly annoying.

Will await responses with great anticipation.

I know a lot of european benz cars do not come with hood pads. Could the application of hood pads to US bound cars cause this effect?

I wonder if the braces on the bottom side of the hood are bonded okay. I've seen the cause the problem you describe, but on other makes of cars.

Good luck,

I found the problem!

Thanks for the input guys. While checking out your ideas, Tom's remark about "wobble" came to mind. I found I could wobble the hood slightly side to side near the front by hand. I found the two little ajustable "feet" and determined neither foot was making contact!

The little "feet" at each front corner of the underside of my hood needed to be adjusted (screwed) out so both just contacted the brace the hood latch is on. I made sure the hood was level, feet locked in position with the locknuts, and the hood still latched securely when closed.

Hope my solution works for others!

Roger

Roger-
Thanks for following up with us regarding the solution. It's nice to see a "closed loop" from problem to solution.

Roger,
Thanks for your detective work. I'm practically breathless in anticipation of going out to my 560 to look for the feet. Of course, I looked only down at the grille area. Thanks to you, I'll look up.
And yes, Webmaster, it's great to see people helping each other..."closing the loop" to a solution.
Thanks to all who make this great forum possible.
