Does the check engine light goes off by itself when the problem is solved or it needs to be reset. Can i reset it myself?

On federal version 1990 300CE you must have scan tool (analog pulse counter). On the Calif. version there is a reset button on diagnostic connector. Procedure is simple.

I think i have a california version.
The car was bought and driven for first 3 years in San Diego area.
What is the precedure than? I already had paid 20$ to my tech to do the diagnostics, it seems to be a bad air censor (I am requesting this part now) and if i can reset this myself, than i don't even have to go back to the tech.
As always this site is amazing ( I can't belive its free :) ) Thanks

Turn on and start engine.
Push button for 3 seconds, count flashes and record. Repeat untill the same code comes out.

Push button for 8 seconds to erase the code. Push for 3 seconds to get out the next one, then 8 to clear....

You must turn off the engine for 15 seconds and wait. Then restart to see if light is off. IF part is failing constantly, it will not erase.
