Faulty Petrol Gauge - CLK 230

CLK 230 Kompressor Coupe - June 1999.

The Petrol Gauage is failing to register the amount of Petrol in the tank - The needle does not move from the "0" position (i.e. Empty / it is constantly below the orange petrol low indicator light and fails to move at all even on filling up the tank). Please advise as to the possible solution/s to this problem.
