Replaced Filter and fluid, tranny 560 SEL but...

Drained all the fluid from pan and TC. Replaced crush washers and gasket. Torqued all to proper torque. Tranny now slips in first gear, and will not engage second at times. Have to stop the car and start again and it will work fine again. Added ~5 3/4 quarts of fluid to tranny.

Will an adjustment take care of this issue or will this go away after a while (Air in the system?).

Thanks in advance.

Andy

Let me get this correct, you added 5.75 quarts of ATF after a complete drain? If that is the case, I strongly suggest you recheck the fluid level.

Cold, a full tranny should read about 10mm below the min mark, best to check at operating temp though. Seeing as how you only have 5.75 quarts in there I'd say you are save to gauge it by the cold check. This tranny should take nearly 8 quarts to refill after a thourough drain. I normally add 6 quarts, then start the engine and let the tranny pump for a few minutes, clycle through the gears and check the level, top up slowly until at the full mark at operating temp.

Hopefully you haven't driven too far on a low tranny.

Oh ****! Looks like I may have to trade this baby in for a new toy. Oh man. Man o man o man..... 8 qts huh? Rhetorical question.

What qualifies as "too far?" In this case with the problems I've been having, the amount of driving I did today.

Thanks. Hope she'll still run in the morning. BTW...have an extra tranny lying around?

That certainly explains the slipping tranny.

Go ahead and top it up, you might just get lucky and find nothing toasted.

Mike,

Thanks. Topped it off and it runs great. Before I did the job, I gave a fellow MB driver a ride. He asked me why the car was starting off in second gear. This being my first MB, did not realize the problem and prompted me to change the filter. I have first gear back.

All 560's start in second gear under D.

It will change down to 1st with full throttle though.

Matt.
