Ticking sound when breaking
 

Hey guys

I did a search but it came up empty, so here is my question.

I use my car very little while in school, mainly on the weekends to get me to work.

Over the past two weeks or so, I notice a ticking sound coming from the back when braking.

It seems that if I break very gently, there is no ticking, but the harder I break the louder the tick is. Now I can't be sure if brakes have anything to do with this, but it seems that way.

To describe the sound, it sounds like a spring getting caught on something, but it is not consistent in frequency.

If I think about springs, the only thing that comes to mind is the springs for the e-brake, but those at the moment are removed, so it is not an option.

My guess is that this could be something with suspension, but I'm wondering if anyone came across something like this and could give me a pointer in the right direction.

I will be looking over all the suspension links over the weekend to see if anything is maybe lose, and needs to be tightened up.

I would bet that your rotor is out of round and causing your pads to move in the caliper.

I do not remember if these have pad clips, but if they do, it could very well be the brake pad clips that is causing the clicking.

Forgot to mention. Check the front end brakes also. It is funny how sometimes cars transmits sounds. Long ago when I worked in brakes, I remember how many times clients would come in stating that their rear brakes where making noise when in the end, it was the front brakes. (it just sounded like it was coming from the rear)

The rear rotors are brand new, well, a few months on them but definately nto enough to cause any problems yet, I still have the old set as well so I can swap them in to see if it will make a difference, but the springs make sense to me especially now that it got a lot colder here.

Well just yesterday I replaced my brake pads all around, driving this morning carefully while they break in, I still hear the same ticking noise.

I was hoping that it would be the spring that holds the pads in place getting a bit crushed because of the wear on the pads, and that by replacing them, I would give the spring the room it needs to do its job correctly, but it does not seems this way, so back to the drawing board, I'll look things over one more time to see if anything is out of order.

I put the car up on my jack stands and got under it, I spinned the wheels a bit and there is a definita squeak coming from the rear flex disc, quite loud too, at higher speeds it sounds like a tick, so I'm guessing this is it.

Now, these flex discs are not even a year old, should they be making squeaky noises already? my old ones were worn to the bone and didn't make a single sound, is there such a thing as a bad flex disc? I got another one I could use, but for the time being maybe I'll srapy it with a lil WD40 and see what happens, it should stop for a while, no signs of wear on it yet.

From what I have read within this forum, Flex Discs should last 50,000 to 60,000 miles. If the new ones, that you state, are already worn out, the premature demise of these could be related to another problem.

Though, when my felx discs were worn out, the sound was more of a clunking than a clinking? Just my expeerience.
