What power steering fluid on 190E?
hi all!
can someone tell me how I check the power steering fluid on my 1990 190E? Do I just twist the black knob on top? What fluid do I add? I hear that ATF will work (which type and brand?). Should I just stick with what the manual says--don't know what it recommends though. Thanks! |

Unscrew the black knob and remove the lid, then start the engine. There is a whitish plastic level indicator in there, the owners manual will explain how to determine if the level is correct.
I recommend the MB power steering fluid, not ATF. ATF is recommended on older MB's with power steering, (older than a 190). If a dealer isn't convenient, go to a PepBoys or Autozone (or even a discount store) and get a container of what they call "power steering fluid", not ATF. Gilly |

addendum to gilly's post...
if you don't go to the dealership be sure to specify that your car is a mercedes (or at least a european car). I believe that the "regular" power steering fluid for domestic and/or japanese cars are of a different specification and may cause issues in the future.

What about the MB power steering fluid? That's what I use. Is it different (it looks and smells it) and does it matter?

It is probably a good idea to also replace the power steering filter while you have the top off. If it hasn't been done in a while, it might be a good idea to totally change the ps fluid. These two things will help ensure a long-life of the pump and compenents. Haasman

ATF is WRONG stuff. I had major leaks to prove it. It will swell your hoses and wreck your gasket.
