Auxilliary heating pump W124 260E 1988

Can somebody tell me whether this pump can be repaired (actually it is leaking) or shall I change for a new one?

thanks in advance

I beleive a dealership lists a rebuild kit for it. I looked on this site and I didn't find one.

If it were mine, I would take it out and look at what is leaking and what needs to be rebuilt before buying the kit. I beleive the last one I replaced I bought a good used one.

Actually, that pump is a non-critical item. Mine had short-circuited and was causing the climate-control unit to shut down to protect itself, and the fix was simply to disconnect the electrical connection to the pump. The purpose of the pump is to pump the coolant when the engine is idling - above idling, the coolant flows sufficiently for heating purposes.

So if you are in a pinch, I believe that you can just find an elbow connector for the two hoses, and just bypass the pump, since your pump is leaking. In my case, the pump was not leaking, so I simply disabled the electrical connection, and my heating system works fine.

I fixed mine.
I removed the screws, pulled it apart and rejoined the 2 sections with a new gasket.

Thanks bobbyv,
If this pump is mainly usefull at idling, would it explain that the temperature of my engine goes sometimes high , even with a new fan cluth and new water pump, and comes back to normal as soon as the car is in moving?

the part is their for a purpose so why disconnect it??? that makes no sense. mine was leaking like yours and I replaced it. the part costs approx. $200 and takes about 30 minutes to replace.

No, I rejoined the 2 sections with a cut out gasket kit and some tube sealant (the type used around waterpumps). It took me 45 mins from start to finish.

To pay $200.00 for that pump without attempting to repair it first means you have lots of money.
I am happy for you.

if you can repair it that's great--but to disconnect it is foolish. that's my point.

And some people's point was that to spend $200 for a replacement is foolish. Mine has not worked for two winters and my heat is fine. Mine does not leak though, if it did before I spent 200 clams I would bypass it and see if the flow and heat is fine, then if need be I would replace it. It's purpose is to keep the flow enough as to not fluctuate heat in te cabin too much when idling, since the water pump does not flow enough coolant that way. It is not really needed, but nice. And before it is said, I have not seen many vehicles with a pump for that purpose, may be needed in Europe but apparantly many US manufacturers do not use it. At least 10 years ago they did not when I worked under the hood of a few diferent models and makes. So is it needed, well no, is it usefull, well MB would not have put it in there if it was not usefull in some way.

To me it makes no noticeable diference working or not. Mine had an unfortunate death when my heater core blew and I bypassed it for a month and forgot to unplug the stupid pump. Silly me not thinking when my legs were burnt to all hell. lol

It is not that I can't it is that I refuse to spend 200 bucks for a little pump that does nothing really in the climate I am in. There is a diference between over engineering and a needed part. If I was up in the Wild White North further than maybe I would notice and need it. Oh and I am by far not the only one who does not have a working aux pump, also note the name Aux pump. It is needed in severe cold where the coolant will cool too much to maintain heat as the car is idling for extended periods of time and of course flow is reduced. Flow is reduced in this manner at this point in every vehicle on the road. Pump is moving the least amount of fluid at idle, yet none of these other autos need this pump for there passengers to survive. So is this really a needed part or simply MB covering all its bases? I chose not to use it and have given my story and the fact that I have not got cold or froze to death as of yet in winter time while at a stop light. I will add that many people probably have a dead pump and do not even know it. I only know mine worked when I got the car and I am not paying 1/4 of what I paid for the car for this pump just to know it works again. **** I do not even know if it is truly dead, it does not leak so it is of no concern since I get good heat.

In the end I say try it without, can't hurt it anymore.
