front ashtray won't close
 

ok, it is a c class 1997 merc.

the front ashtray cover will not shut- any ideas what is wrong with it and how do i fix it.

I would pull the ashtray insert itself and see what is causing it to malfunction. Be sure you can view inside and see whats in its way. Sometimes it is a wire and/or connector bunched-up behind the sliding part.

If necessary, take the two phiilips screws out and remove the holding assembly and check its movement as well as whats behind it.

i did in fact pull the ashtray insert out,had a good look but could not see any obvious cause .

i do not use it as an ashtray,but more as a coin holder for parking meter payments.

where are the two phillips srews you mention?,maybe there is something(a coin) behind the sliding assembly causing it to not close .
