Gas Cap Leak!

does gas caps leak usually? gasket go bad ever? I filled up my car the other day, I didn't over fill. i stopped when it clicked as always. Today when I made short trip I smelled gas, looked inside the gas door and some gas. wiped it dry.. went driving around and again more gas. I thought it was just full but its now down 1/8 of a tank after driving 30 miles, and still leaking. HELP!
cars os 1996E320, 106000 miles. thanks!
... and no CEHECK ENGINE LIGHTS!

Why not stick a new one on then? - They ain't big ticket items.

The system is pressurized...if your cap leaks, then you will have problems with gas spewing out of the cap (especially on hot days)!

But I am concerned about the amount you are losing! A cap leak would lose trace amounts...perhaps you have a leak elsewhere.

It doesn't take much fuel to create a lot of odor!

I had to buy and use an aftermarket, ugly looking cap when the car went through a Drive Clean test here and was told the cap failed the pressure test. I had that cap for a week and replaced it with a factory one.

Now i find wet spot under the cap sometimes before i removed the cap for fuel and it smells gas. I am 100% sure it's not from the last refuel 'cos i never overflow it.

Since it's a new cap, what else can i try to stop this?

Thanks for the advise.
