123 Fog Lights
 

Anyone know if clear fogs are available for this chassis?

Our W123 300TD we owned prior to our W124 300TE had "clear" (ie. not yellow) fog lights. In fact, all MBs in Oz have white fogs. I believe the yellow colour is either the bulb itself or a coloured cover that goes over it. Then again, your yellow ones may be the lenses, given that the US models got different headlights altogether. Our W123 had circular shaped reflectors behind a one piece glass cover that had the fluted lenses moulded into it.

I've seen clear lights at kragen that look exactly the same size. I think they are meant to be headlights for other cars, but they are clear, the right size, and most probably connect the same way. So you could just use them as fog lights...

I have seen W123s with white fog lights, both on the web and in person. I don't know if they were factory or aftermarket, but at any rate it is doable.

Yes they are available. I had them on a previous 123 car I owned. I finally removed them because when I used them for fog, everyone thought I had my high beams on and continuosly flashed at me. Pissed everyone off.

I put in the amber/yellow ones and NEVER did anyone react that way again.

The amber/yellow are preferred because the reflected light off of moisture in the air (fog) is less objectionable.

BTW, I often will drive with my fog lamps on, whether it is foggy or not. I like making my car appear distinctive in traffic, seems to help with some drivers who try to pull out in front of my car during the limited day light hours of winter.

they don't have to be that high, since they are used to illuminate only a small distance ahead of the car (since they will be used in low-visibility conditions, and you shouldn't be driving that fast anyway in such conditions).

personally, i aim mine a bit higher than normal (in my Euro-lamped 190e2.6), since in such a setting, they are perfect as daytime-running-lights, the wide beam angle making you visible across a wide angle from the front.

I have PIAA Ion Crystal H3 bulbs, which make the oncoming traffic see the blue-whitish part of the beam, which created on the fringe of the projected beam - perfect as a DRL. The yellow part of the beam meanwhile, is an intense yellow. I am very satisfied with them.

Just curious, you are asking about the 123 chassis, yet your signature line says you own a 300 SD. That would be either a W116 chassis or W126 chassis. Neither one of the those has round fog lights.
The amber fog lights for the 123 were glass Bosch lamps with replaceable light bulbs form behind, H3 I believe.

I own drive a 300SD and a 300TDT both 83's.

The CLEAR glass lens for the fog light (in the 123 series) are indeed available.
I have ONE OF EACH in my 300d:cool:
With 1 yellow lens, I get the advantage in fog AND rain/snow....as well as EXTRA light from the clear lens.
Rarely do I get ZAPPED as if I am running high beams.......HOWEVER, when this does occur, I instantly ZAP BACK with my high beams, and that shuts THEM up...:D
Running with the EXTRA lamps on is something that I do. Not always, however they do offer a little bit of DISTINCTION to the masses.:o
I believe that either color lenses are available thru the various aftermarket catalogues etc. aprox $45/$50 each.
Or go the boneyard route and keep one extra on hand for when they crack:eek:
