I have read all the discussions concerning the timing chains and tensioners. However, some post are also recommending changing the camshaft sprockets. Is this limited to certain models or all. BTW the car in question is a 16V. Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't replace something (read this as disassemble parts and systems) unless the part showed wear or was broken. The more you take things apart the higher the risk of breaking something else. Chain rails are a better candidate for replacement.

This question has many answers.
My opinion is that on the V-8 engines, you have to do the timing chain, sprockets and rails to do the job properly. The reason is the long chain in the V-8's. When the chain starts to stretch, it eats at the sprockets. On the 6's and twin cam 4's, the chains don't stretch that much, the rails will do fine if the stretch is OK. ------------------ Benzmac: Donnie Drummonds 1992 500E (very soon I hope :) 1981 280GE SWB ASE CERTIFIED MASTER AUTO TECHNICIAN SERVICE MANAGER FOR 14 BAY FACILITY MERCEDES SPECIALIST 8 YRS PARTNER IN MERCEDESSHOP.COM |
