Need good additive!
 

I have one niosy lifter [only when cold] and would like to add a cleaner to the oil. Any suggestions?

I may stand corrected and please do if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that the 420/560's had adjustable valve clearances?

If so, have you tried that?

Probably a bad lifter period. I wouldn't worry about it. There are some additives out there, but the only legitimate co. that comes to mind is "Lucas". I'm not sure if they make a detergent though.

Threre's a million opinions on additives, so no flame intended.

When it's cold and my car has been sitting for a day or so, it will make lifter noise for a few secs. I ran a detergent (name escapes me) and did nothing.

The valves on the M117 aren't adustable.

Also, how many miles? My clatter started at about 90k in near 0-15F temps.

The heads were rebuilt last year about 10,000 mi. ago.I do not know how to adjust the valves on this car. I think they installed new spaces???? Car has 176,000 mil,s

420 NOISE
 

Have you had the timing chain rails and tensioners checked. At every 100k this should be checked and the rails/tensioners replaced. You don't want the rails to break and cause the chain to jump and cause major damage. Just a thought.

if the tapping is continuous then you need to be concerned and open the valve covers now before damage can be done to the cam & rocker arm. if the tapping is left alone it can progress and possibly damage the cam. if it's only on startup then disappears in a few seconds maybe just maybe adding a detergent may work

mechanically if it's only a valve compensating element (ball stud or lifter) then for 30$ you can fix it. plus 5$ for the valve cover gasket. a cam costs about 275$ plus 8 new rocker arms etc:.

if you want to try the detergent route try either Marvel Mystery Oil or Rislone would be what i would add. run it a few miles maybe 50 if the noise does not disappear then it's mechanical and needs to be addressed.

i had this exact thing happen on my 88 last year and i left it tap away and it cost me that cam. all over only 1 ball stud.

if yours is intermittant, then i suggest changing your
oil to mobil 1 15/50.
i have had huge success with this.
my shop uses mobil 1 15/50 almost in every car.
if after changing and the noise returns, then change
again. absolutely works.
but if you have some mileage on your engine, i would
suggest you check you cams and rockers for wear and
make sure that the oiler tube plastic connectors are tight.

I agree with Craig. My racket has gone on for too long (first owner?) so I'm sure head work is in order. Not pressing, but surely something to tackle if I want to keep the car.

As i stated both heads were rebuilt including new rocker arms, valve guides,seals,chain,rails and tentioner.All lifters were checked at the time and were o.k As soon as i get valve cover gaskets from phil i will try to find out where the noise is comming from. Thanks for all your help.
