Hey guys, just wanted to thank all for the tech help installing the sunroof cable, what I dont understand is why a ridiculously easy 10 minute job like this warrants 2-3 hours of labor from a Mercedes dealership? I could see one hour with the adjustment afterwards, but 2-3 hours at $70 an hour?!

Anyway my question was how do I go about adjusting the tension on the cable? When the switch is held forward the sunroof closes fully then the back tilts up. I know that it should close fully but with no tilt unless you tilt the button. I did mess around with the tension before replacing my cable, thinking that was the problem.

It seems that the tension is a bit too high and I need to lower it. But the words on the tension knob are in German. So which way to close the sunroof more, and which way to close it less? I already know to pull it out 2 clicks, then turn it, but if my sunroof is closing too much (ie: tilting at end) then which way do I adjust knob.

Thanx all.

I think that there is a way to turn the knob until the hole lines all of the way up. Look in with a flash light. There should be a little hole somewhere in the motor as the knob turns around. You can use a small straw to feel if it will go all of the way through. Like a combination lock. Then you will have to fine adjust from there.

The reason for charging is that we have to take out the sunroof liner. Install the cable, adjust it, and warranty the repair. Also we have many, many, many hours of experience invested in doing these things .

Didnt mean to imply that a shop does not deserve what it charges. But this job was literally 10 minutes, and thats including the sunroof headliner removal, but not the adjustment. If the case is that the Mercedes dealer has more knowledge and expertise then they should charge $150 an hour and just charge one hour of labor. If the issue is that more was wrong than just the cable, then of course more should be charged. Best case scenario is 2 hours X $70, plus the cable at $55 is $195 + tax to replace the cable. And that's best scenario.

Just my 2 cents, and why I try to go with independent shops until I make my first million.

Spinedoc,
Trust that you got your sunroof adjusted to close correctly. Well, mine has started to do the same thing; i.e. when closing from the 'open' position the roof closes as it should, but rather than stopping there it continues to the 'up' position. Similarly, when closing from the 'up' position, the roof lowers as it should, but rather than stopping at that point it merrily continues on to slide the roof 'open' (a runaway sunroof!)

I'd really appreciate hearing how you made the adjustment (tension knob?). Also, any ideas as to what might have caused it to go out of sync in the first place (cable was not replaced).

Thanks with best regards, Barrie
