trans question

ok, when I first start the car put it in "D" occasionally in pops into nutural I just move the shifter slightly to get it back in. Now, onceit acted different when I accidentally filled the trans fluid a bit over full, instead of popping out of gear it made a horable sound like grinding... all this only when the engines cold, OR if Im driving a while and park 10 minutes .
Im traleling and about a 1000 miles from home, my main question is should I be concerned, does this sound like a problem that will tipically get worse within a month or less?

I have a 1979 300 TDdiesel wagon. I was told by a tech that the 79 trans' "use springs not vacume" Im now in the Menicino California area.

Question- Does the shifter have a lot of play? Part of the problem could be simply the shifter bushings.

yes there is a little play. Now Ive driven about 700 miles since my post and the fluid is not over the full mark, and it no longer makes the noise, in fact it hasnt popped out of gear either, just sometimes I put it in D and it doesnt engage, so I move it out then back in and its fine. Still sound like shifter bushings?

Thanksfor your help!
Mike

Thats what it sounds like to me. If your bushings are loose or gone, they will have to be replaced anyway and the least expensive repair.

They can be a bit of a pain to install. Do a search. There are many suggestions on how to do it. Takes some patience but worth it.

Keep us posted,
