run lock-out

my 1996 E 300 diesel has 160,000 miles and is demanding attention!! Lately it will stop running while traveling and I have to reset my start lock-out from outside the car, after waiting for the green and red lights in the rear view mirror stop flashing!Then when I lock the car, using my keyless remote, and unlock the car I am back in run mode.What is going on????
