I own a 1986 260E. It's a same engine as 300E only with 2,6 L and 160 Hp not 3,0 L. Let the MB dealer check the car to stay away from unplesent surprises. I just paid 700$ for a air flow sensor and this is not an uncommon problem on these engines also check a rear diff and tranny.

The cars are nice drivers. I currently have one for sale (I'm a micro dealer) and it's very pleasant to drive. Doesn't have much down low, but once over 2500R has good power. I would watch for AC problems in 89's though; it seems I've put an evaporator on just about every 89 model 124 I've had. If it's anything close to not cold, you should count in about $1000 for an Evap and drier. Also take a look at the radiator and muffler. Both pretty common, as well as oil leak around the chain cover. Good luck, allen

Why not just find a good 300E? I'm in Atlanta and they are plentiful and all of the repair issues are virtually the same. The odds of finding a 300e with leather is higher, too. The extra power is well worth any extra money you might pay and it will pay you back on resale. While the 260E's are nice cars they were a stripper model relative to most 300e's. Just my opinion.
