Engine Replacement - HELP!

My 1982 automatic 240D is the unfortunate victim of a seized engine. I've been debating as to either replace the engine or find another Benz. I've received support on both sides, especially since my 240D is in such good shape.

I've considered putting in a rebuild (which is a bit pricey at $3k), getting a used from a salvage yard (much cheaper, not very comfortable with that) and now I've located a 1980 automatic 300D for $500 - it's in fair condition inside and out but runs great.

So, is it even worth considering pulling the 240 and putting in a 300?

Does anyone have any additional options?

Or if I should kiss her goodbye, any suggestions on finding some older Benz's for sale? I've located a bunch but they're thousands of miles away and I would be buying a car that I'd only seen over the internet.

I would dump it. It can not be fixed for less than it is worth. A rebuild that costs 3k sounds expensive but is actually cheap if it was done properly. By the time its in the car you will have too much in it even with free labor.

We currently have a 240D standard trans that we rebuilt the motor in last winter as a filler project. We did it because the body and interior were so nice. We have been offering it for sale for less than the retail price of the motor overhaul (with all the details) and it's too much money.

What prevents you from moving the good/better parts from the 240D to the 300D?

Sentiment is probably the main thing preventing me refurbing the 300D. Not out of the question, though.

I see so few 240D's here in Mississippi but plenty of 300Ds. Guess I'm a softy for the old gal. :)

You would have to change the front springs in the 240D to accomodate the extra weight of the 300D's engine.

If you want to keep it... find a used motor for $500 or so.

Maybe you can find a wrecked or rust bucket for the motor(?).
