'93 124 windshield removal
 

Anyone have any suggestions for removing the windshield of a '93 124?

There is a horrible squeak in the area of the lower left corner of my windshield at certain temperatures. According to the previous owner this squeak started after the windshield was replaced with a PPG unit. I think the glass is rubbing on part of the body at certain temperatures. It is driving me nuts! If I can get to the gasket area I may be able to fix it w/o removing the glass, but we'll see.

If anyone out there has removed the trim and/or glass successfully, I'd be interested in hearing their technique. Thanks for the help.

The W124 windshield is glued in. A squeak at low temps sounds more like trim not installed correctly than windshield to me, it shouldn't move.

However, carefully inspect the A pillar. I've heard reports that it is not adequately spot welded in some cars, causing noises when it separates. Cure is to clamp and weld.

I've never seen anyone remove a windshield from a 124 without destroying it (the windshield, that is).

Just as an aside,,, we have the best glass shop in the country do all our R & I's on glass, and I haven't had him break a windshield yet. He pulls back glasses, 1/4 windows or whatever,,, he loves a challenge.

Wow! I'm impressed. Considering how they have to cut the seal all the way around the windshield.

I've seen it done three times with little shards of glass from the edge flying everywhere all three times.

They used a little blade with a pull-handle on it but it was still destructive.

IIRC, on the W124 two wires are shorted to melt the original factory adhesive and then the glass can be lifted out CAREFULLY.
I have no idea if it applies to aftermarket replacement glass and adhesives.

The manual calls for a reciprocating cutter with 90 degree blades to cut the adhesive. Looks to me as if I would mangle the glass, too -- I'm not THAT good with big power tools.

Thanks for all of the responses on removal of the windshield. Looks like my best bet is to ensure that it is the windwhield sqeaking. Allong those lines I did some experiments. Here's what I know:

1) Only happens at warm underhood temperatures.
2) The noise may be created by bouncing the left front of the car and is clearly audible from the outside (and inside!) of the car
3) The noise goes away with the hood at the fully up (vertical) position!
4) Lubing the hood hinges had no effect.
5) Lubing the anti roll bar and suspension bushings had no effect.

From the above I am no longer suspecting the windshield. I'm thinking something inside the fender. Maybe the hinge assembly. If anyone has any ideas please chime in!

I think I cured it!
 

After taking off the inner fenders and checking/lubing all of the hood hardware I thought I had cured the dreaded squeak. But no! Seems that the temperatures just were not right on Saturday and the squeak came back in full form on Sunday. Ahhhh! Well here's what has taken care of it:
1) Backed off all the hardware securing the fender.
2) Applied some silicone spray to the hardaware and surrounding surfaces.
3) Gave the car a few good bounces.
4) Tightened the hardware.
5) Squeak gone!

Needless to say I'm sure happy I didn't jump into replacing the windscreen! Appears that at certain temperatures the fender was stressed and causing a squeak. Backing off the hardware removed whatever binding there was and the squeak with it. Hopefully it will stay gone. Thanks again for the help and suggestions.
