engine noise on cold start
I have owned a 94 E320 with 85,000 miles for about 2 months. The engine makes a "clatter" noise on cold starts. The clatter stops when the coolant temperature rises. No difference after an oil change with a new MB filter. Any ideas?

What grade of oil are you running in it right now? What's the temp outside?

does it seem to come from the engine or from behind. Sort of sounds like what happens in my 400e before i changed the fuel filter

Noise is definitely coming from the engine. Oil is 15W50 Mobil 1 and temp in my garage is never lower than 40F. Noise always subsides after some temp is seen on the gauge. I never stress the engine until it reaches normal operating tempurature when the gauge stabiliazes just over 80C.

I just had the exact same problem in mine. I switched to mobil 5w-30 yesterday and the noise is all but gone. I'm guessing it was a lifter. I heard a VERY SLIGHT ticking for a couple of seconds today when I cranked it, but after that nothing. Certainly not like it was before I changed it.

What brand of filter are you using?

Filter is Knecht. Same noise before and after oil change. Could it be the timing chain or tensioner?
