129 center console removal

I have searched the site without success to find directions/guidance on removing the center console in my '93 300SL to replace the light that illuminates the gear shift panel. I was also thinking about replacing the gear shift knob and understand that you must replace the shaft as well. Can anyone assist me with directions to a post or instructions that explain removal of the center console?

Thanks.

I replaced a shift housing bulb recently and removed the wood console for easier access. After reassembly, I decided that it may be possible to do the job without removing the console. Perhaps one of the pros can comment.

To remove the console you must first remove the radio, the climate control unit, and the plastic surrounding the shift housing. Ten you remove the liner to the little storage compartment that is located below the radio. The key to this is to pop the sides loose and fold them inward before you pull it out. With the liner removed, the two screws which secure the wood console are exposed. Remove them and lift the rear of the console up and then slide the front down and withdraw.
