W124- what the heck is this noise?!

did a fairly long trip last night (around 200miles) and right as I got close to my house (last mile or so) my car started making this strangle noise. very loud inside the cabin, not so loud outside and i dont think it's coming from the engine bay (but it was too cold to open and check). if it was, it sounded like from near the rear of the bay/behind the center of the dash.
basically the frequency was about every 2 seconds for about 2 seconds, a kind of 'whine/moan/howl', somewhat like when a big rig is slowing down and it makes that 'moaning' noise.

any ideas?

It could be your blower motor for the HVAC system going out.

It is located under the cowl where the windshield wipers are.

There is also a small fan, called an aspirator motor, that is located behind the right ac vent. It's purpose is to blow air up through the A pillar, through the head liner, to the small vent opening near the sunroof control above the windshield. There is an air temp sensor there for the HVAC control to tell it what the temp is.

Check the grill?

Sorry, I couldn't resist .....

I believe the little blower pulls air in from the overhead grill in the interior light cluster ......

no kids- thankfully.

no small animals trapped under there either I hope.

wasn't making the noise today- has only doen it the one time (yesterday) and that's the longest straight trip i've done since i've had the car. We'll have to see if it happens next time...
