Anyone else smells burning oil entering the cabin?

Recently I have noticed the smell of burnt oil coming into the cabin, there is no blue smoke coming out of the tailpipre however.

Every now and then I smell a burnt oil smell, usually right after going through a car wash with an undercarriage wash. I also know the cause, my Benz uses a little oil but it isn't burning it, I have a leaking valve cover gasket. I thought it was perhaps the front seal but the guy at my local Midas (I know, I know.... I've known this guy for years and he knows his way around and under cars) told me it wasn't the front seal. Other than that, oil usage isn't a problem.

Oil smell

I would wager that if you lift the car and look you will see that your head gaskets are weaping a bit of oil at the outside corners nearest the firewall and this is getting on the exhaust and burning. Hate to say it but 9 out of 10 leak a bit, not internally but just a little weaping. You can replace the head gaskets or buy some racers exhaust heat rap and put it around the exhaust, the oil will still get on it but it will not burn and sell.

Not the best advise but honestly, why do the gaskets if you do not need to right away, wait unitl some other service issue gets you into the area, the external leak is not dangerous, will not damage the engine (as long as you check the oil) and is a great deal of work. I have been putting mine off for months and at least 9 out of 10 that come into my shop have the same leaks, one has only about 3000 miles on new head gaskets (not done by me thankfully). I know there is a way to remove the heads without pulling the intake as well, but have not done one for some time and my memory is failing me.

I get a whif of oil now and then and it bugs me to know there is a leak so I keep thinking of other work I can do while I am in there... Headers? Valve job? Chain?

Good luck,

Chris

Thanx guys, i've noticed it is common for this engine to weap around the gaskets, and since i don't have to top off my oil between oil changes I guess I can live with it. For now I like the idea of wrapping the exhaust - thanx for the idea.
