Smoking 1991 Benz 350SD

High pitched whistle sound from engine, ocassionally only when temperature was cold. Probably turbo. Car ran fine till engine started to run rough and lose power. Tremendous amount of smoke from exhaust. Two quarts of oil used in 20 miles.

Pulled the pipe going to the intake manifold and found it was saturated with fresh oil. Fresh oil comming from turbo. Turbo prop can be spun with fingers but is loose. Can be moved side to side, up and down but not forward or backward.

Question: Is it possible for the turbo to be sucking large amounts of oil from the engine??

Engine does not knock, rattle or ping. No water usage. No oil leaks. Timing chain is good.

I have discovered the source of my problem. The turbo prop shaft bearing was broken in at least 2 pieces. These pieces were blocking the return oil orifice.
