104 head gasket replacement modification?

On the 104 block, there are oil ports that dead end at the head gasket, meaning there aren't matching ports on the head. The head gasket does not have holes at these locations but actually terminate the oil port from the block.

Has anyone come across a modification to the block where you tap. locktight and plug these ports on the block? The theory is that at high revs, around 60 PSI, with a deteriating, receding head gasket, the pressure can cause the external oil leak on this engine. Knowing that the common leaks on this engine occur in the right front and rear left of the engine, these oil ports happen to reside in these areas.

Also, for reference, how much have you paid for a head gasket replacement on a 104?

best regards,

I just had this done at a local recommended indie, Mr. MB in Tarzana, CA.

Total was 1690 and included valve seals, by pass hose, spark plugs and temperature switch.

I later found out my Japanese indie would have done it for far less, but I am happy with the work from Mr. MB.

My knowledge of head gasket failure and repair is limited. My gasket leak was internal, oil in the coolant. I think the failure was related to my car overheating with a broken thermostat.

My impression is that if it is just a faulty gasket and the head does not have to be sent to a machine shop to be tested and refinished, the cost of the repair could be more modest.
