regular?premium??
I just filled my 88 W124 up today. It was cold I was in a rush and by accident put regular gas in her (a full tank) Will this act of stupidity do any harm? Should us a octane booster????
All because the roads where dry and premium gas is 3 cents cheaper on Thursday ![]()

you fool! she's gonna blow any second!
I think you'll be alright this once. I read you might get some engine knock but I don't think there will be any permenant damage. just don't do it again! ![]()

I now always put 87 in my car. After several long trips using 87 and 91 octane the mileage is the same and the engine has no trouble.

my experience is those engines will usually take regular without TOO much trouble. if it doesn't ping it is fine

One of the primary variables in the detonation equation is air inlet temperature. The hotter the inlet air, the more tendency to detonate, so there is less tendency to detonate in cold winter weather.
Listen for detonation. It is most likely at low revs and high load. Less likely at high revs, high load. Since I only drive my 190E 2.6 during the winter, I use 87 PON. If I short shift and load up the engine too quick I get a little transient detonation, but I have learned to adjust my driving habits to avoid it. Duke |

87 - 91 - 93, They are all similar and those are minimum octane ratings. From what I have heard from the distributors, at most gas stations these are actually the same fuel. Amoco (BP) Ultimate is one that is truly different. I would recommend to anyone to try a couple tanks of the cheap stuff and see if you really notice a difference.

same fuel as in the same rating?
By the way LimeyB- let us know if you get any ill-effects with the regular gas...

Seems like my owner's manual says something like, "If you must use regular, do not drive at higher speeds/RPMs," or something to that effect.
What is that all about? I thought the detonation danger was more at low RPM / high load? I've used 87 for years, BTW. No problems.
