Synthetic Oil - Group III and IV?

What's all the controversy about Synthetic Oils?
Seems that many "synthetic" oils are not what we would assume they are.
Syntech, which I have used, seems to be particularly questionable...

Anyone understands this well enough. Does it mean that only Mobil 1 can be trusted? Can it truly be trusted?

I change oil every 5000 mi on a M119 engine (8.5 quarts). It's a pain and I won't do it every 3000 mi.
