Cost to recharge R134 system?

Can anyone give me an idea of how much it will cost to recharge/leak test an R134 system on an '86 560SL? I've been quoted 200 bucks but this seems a bit steep - any comments?

Thanks, Ryan

I recharged my R134 system myself with a simple $15 kit and some cans of R134,, they have detailed instructions and it is very simple

Thanks, Evan, I'd never considered doing it myself. I'll give it a try this weekend.

Its almost fool proof, just make sure you get a recharge kit that has a pressure dial... i dont remember what the pressure is suppose to be but mine blows ice cold!!!

This is not foolproof. You should use manifold gauges and KNOW what you're doing. If you use a suicide hose, make SURE that you charge on the low side port. Charging on the high side port can explode the can.

Best of luck,

that is why i said ALMOST Fool Proof.. I did it on my Mercedes according to the instructions and i have not had one problem with it since the recharge..

Get a proper manifold gauge set if you intend to do your own AC work. Take some time to learn about AC systems. It's not worth messing around. AC components are too expensive to take a blind trial & error approach to it.
