W124 3.0 E Gas Air Mixture Adjustment
Can anyone advise on the location-
if it is present of the adjustment screw on either the flow meter or the fuel distributor that allows mechanicaly to adjust the air amount in a K jetronic system without having to hook the engine to a computer? |
You'll see a little tower on the airflow meter. There is an adjusment screw inside. 3mm I think? Anyway, it may be protected by a little steel ball that you'll have to get out, or replace the tower.

Turning clockwise richens the mixture; turning counter-clockwise leans it out.

The tower is screwed by means of two screws
at the bottom, shall I unscrew the tower or interfere in the spring mechanism in the tower without unscrewing it? |
Don't remove the tower - not even the air filter. Allen wrench access is through the hole in the top of the air filter housing.

of course one should not touch that adjustment until one knows what one is doing. One needs to know how to tell when one has done it right.
I only mention this because it is not likely anyone asking how to "that allows mechanicaly to adjust the air amount" is likely to know what they are doing. Actually the fact that you wish to avoid the simple computer mechanism to do this ("without having to hook the engine to a computer"), proves the point. Anyway, ONE does NOT adjust the amount of air. That is done with one's foot when one drives. One adjusts the amount of fuel not air! |

The reason for this is the fact that natural propane gas instalations are made to these engines to save on fuel
and I had propane tank in the trunk of the car. I removed that installation from my car, since it took too much of heat from the heating (engine coolant used to warm up the propane ). After the replacement when I drive on gasoline the mixture remaines too rich thus the need to go back and make that adjustment first if it was altered by the previous owner. |

It is possible to manually adjust the air/fuel mixture. But you need at least a tool to measure the CO level from the exhaust while doing it. I had an old MB tech (he really was old) do this on my 300E. He needed a 1 ft long extension on the adjustment key, to be able to turn the adjustment screw in small enough increments. 1/10 of a full turn on that screw will 'screw up' your mixture totally!
