So we just bought an '87 420SEL...Questions of course regarding the HUGE machine

First of all, it drives like a dream. Almost as dreamy as my w116, but not by a long shot in my eyes. Anyways, here comes the questions.

1.) When activating the windshield washer, it only sprays but does not activate the wipers.
2.) The intermittent wiper setting doesn't work, related to #1 I assume?
3.) When the heat is on, it only blows cool air out the back vent in the center, is this normal? Even with the car on it's highest heat setting, it is still cool air coming out.
4.) Sometimes after starting, the car will squeal for about 3 seconds, this isn't the dreaded chain rattle is it? It osunds like a blet, but my dad wants to take it on a 5 hour trip each way and I just want to make sure.
5.) The ambient temperature display only works with the key turned to on, then it goes out either right after the car is started or about 3 seconds after it is running.
6.) The a/c compressor doesn't come on. I looked very briefly at all the fuses and they appeared to all be okay, could it just be that low on freon? Their are no stickers indicating that it has ever been switched over, and the fittings look to be orginal. Also, one of the a/c lines going to the drier behind the l/h headlight looks rusted, is that okay?
7.) Their seems to be a slight ticking noise coming from the engine. Are these known to wear out rockers or lifters?

The car has 173,000 miles and we DON'T know if the chain and rails have been replaced. My dad knows about the potential problem with the chain and doesn't think he has anything to worry about yet because, "they don't always break, I'm sure some people's last 300,000 miles. Wouldn't it have probably been replaced if it has lasted this far?

Thanks
David

Point no. 3

It is normal for the rear blower not to blow warm air. It is not designed to do that. I had the same concern when I bought my car. The service dept. at the MB dealer assured me that that's how it should be.

There are a number of reasons why the AC compressor might not engage. The switches at the dryer may be kaput, or you might be low on freon. If the car has an R12 system, I wouldn't recommend simply pumping more refrigerant into it without doing a comprehensive leak test. Leaky AC manifold hoses and compressor fittings are common.

You are playing with fire on this timing chain issue. Most chains don't break but related pieces in the timing chain system, guides and rails, get weak and brittle with age and it is these pieces that break and jam up the timing chain in the timing gear teeth causing the chain to jump and that leads to major engine repairs (valves and pistons). The general rule on this forum for timing chain and related item replacement is 10 years/100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Anything past those limits and you are rolling the dice....

The chain on my car went out at 35,000 miles. Luckily the dealer covered all repair/conversion costs.
I personally wouldn't mess with the chain issue - it's expensive enough to total the car. Get it fixed as soon as possible.

1) probably a bad combo switch. Pushing in the end knob to engage the wipers twists the end knob to the intermittent position. It wipes continuously whch the end knob is pushed in then returns to intermittent until you turn it off.

2) would be my guess

3) hot air for the rear cabin comes from under the front seats. Close the rear vent manually if it gets too cold. Welcome to MB ACC

4) I don't think the chain can squeak

7) check the plastic fittings on the cam towers that squirt oil on the cam lobes. When these go, the cam follows shortly.

So it is suppose to blow cool air out the rear center vent? What exactly is this air pump thing? I am going to do a search now on it.
Thanks
David

If you think about it for a minute, it actually makes sense. Heat needs not be directed at the rear passengers for them to feel comfortable in the shortest possible time. You release warm air at the lowest possible point and it will rise due its lower density compared to the cooler cabin air. Cold air in a hot passenger compartment on the other hand needs to be directed at the rear passengers to make them feel comfortable as quickly as possible even before the entire cabin temperature is lowered to a comfortable level. Die Jungen und die Mädchen im Vaterland really knew what they were doing.

Mine went south so we bypassed it. No smog nazis around here to worry about.

no, this isn't the one from NY. This one WAS on ebay. The guy sold it to someone else, and the deal fell through becaue they were foreign and couldn't get insurance. So the guy e-mailed my dad, since my dad had sent him a couple e-mails inquiring about the car and asked if my dad wanted it. He said yes, now it's ours. This one was in Malloughby, Ohio. Here is a link to it.

I have yet another question, the rear defroster doesn't come on. If you push the button, it stays luminated until it is released, and that's it. The switch doesn't stay lit after being released. I should probably point out, that what I thought was the a/c compressor not coming on is ACTUALLY the air pump, I'm an idiot. Now I need to see if the a/c compressor actually works now.
Thanks
David

Does anyone actually have a response for #5 about the ambient temp. display? It is obviously no big deal, I just want to make the car the way it is suppose to be.
Thanks
David

P.S.
The cruise control actually works correctly! YAY!

Temp display should stay on once you start the car or when it's on the acc position.

Nice looking car, I like the silver on black!

Not sure what I was thinking. Maybe this is the case for a 109 or 116. Not the case for a 126.
