Got "new" tach guage, but not working properly
Hey guys:
I picked up a Tach/Clock combo guage from a 1987 190e for my 1983 190e that had only a big clock in that position in the instrument panel.
I swapped out the clock for the clock/tach combo, and wired the tach + to + on coil and TD to - on coil.
Tach appears to work ok, but only from 2k rpms upwards. At slower rpms than 2k, it bounces around between 2k and 3k. Once the engine reaches true 2k rpms and above, tach works fine as seen when driving on the highway from 42mph upwards in 4th gear.
Am I missing something for the tach? I mean is there supposed to be an amp or some other electrical component between the tach and the coil? My car never had a tach, so I wanted one and now I have one that works ok but not for idle to 2k speeds.
Any help on this issue will be greatly appreciated!! Maybe I need to return to the junk yard and pickup another component from the old 87 190e to make this work properly. Please let me know if you have any ideas and thanks!!
