W124 Steering problem
 

Hi guys,
Im a newbie here....and I really need your help on finding the problem on my car.
My car is 1995 E320 W124
I had a little play on the steering wheel, and on roads with a high crown, the car is hard to keep from drifting out of the lane.
I just recently changed this part:
1. Lower control arm that built in with ball joints.
2. Idler arm
3. Both left and right tierod
4. Front wheel bearings.
Please give me suggestions and comments.

Tires/wheels might be the problem. Post back with sizes, brands, and offset. Any changes in alignment from stock spec?

Is there excess play in the steering when sitting still?
Perhaps steering box need adjustment.

Also, consider that there could be a problem in the rear.

Those tires are going to amplify any problem. Sometimes you need a little extra toe in with fat tires.

there is a little play about an inch when the car is sitting still.
I checked with the mercedes dealer in Wisconsin and they said that I might need a new steering box that cost $1000 only for the parts, because I cannot adjust the steering box and it could be dangerous.
Perhaps, you could give me instruction on how to tighten the steering box, because it is kind of hard to reach since the steering box is located under the manifold of the engine.

That steering box is not "hard to reach". It is virtually impossible!
You wil need a set of incredibly long and thin arms to get up there, but i can be done.
You will find lots of threads with instructions on how to adjust the steering box properly if you do a search like this one.
Beware not to tighten it too much, or you will suddenly need a whole new steering box!

Also, as already mentioned.. Those huge wheels will amplify your tramlining (wandering) problem greatly. But they sure do look good on that Benz. :cool:

If you still have play, then you need to remove it. If you can adjust the box, then you to do it.

Also, don't overlook the rear suspension. Loose members can cause the car to exhibit strange handling characteristics. Start by raising the car and examining all the bushings in the "dogbones." You should see no rubber pieces coming out of any of the joints. It never hurts to grab them and give them a shake to check for looseness.
