Our 92 300E (4 speed automatic) shifts solidly but abruptly into 2nd, then 3rd (not so much 4th). When shifting into 2nd, there is sometimes a belt squeek accompanying the shift. If we back off the accelerator a bit just about shift time, the transition is a lot smoother. We've been told that this was an idiosyncracy we should get used to, but I'd like another opinion. It just doesn't seem normal for a luxury car. Other than the shifting problem, acceleration and dropping down a gear to pass feels fine. The fluid level is right where it should be. Thanks for your imput.

MB trannies may be more distinct than slushy domestic ones but they are very adjustable. Most idiosyncracies with MB transmissions are do to improper adjustment.
Sounds like you need a major adjustment to the control pressure cable. The housing must be lengthened; causing the cable to be puled more. ------------------ Steve Brotherton Owner 24 bay BSC Bosch Master, ASE master L1 26 years MB technician |
I am having the exact same problem with my 92 400E. Rough shift from 1-2 & 2-3 and the belt sweak when under medium to hard throttle. Please let me know if you have found a way to correct the problem. I'll do the same.
Thanks. |
Your "Belt squeak" is your back tires barking. It is shifting so hard the tires are breaking traction.
