catalytic or heat shield?

I have a rattle under my car, can't find an obvious/loose heatshield. I understand the cat can rattle - I have 79920 miles (so emission warranty is about to go). How do I check the cat (hit it with a wood block and listen for rattle)?

Hate to have a bad cat and barely miss the warranty.
Dealer cannot get me in before Monday, and I will be past 80kmi by then . . .

tow it in if you have to, get a rental car, whatever...it is almost definately the cats as it is very common for them to rattle and they are not what one would refer to as an inexpensive part.

Thanks!
I brought it in to the dealer this afternoon, they ruled out the cats/they think.
But they wanted me to bring it in so they can document it before 80kmi. Seemed the prudent thing to do.

if you can here the rattle while the vehicle is in gear but standing still (foot on the brake) and it increases in intensity with engine speed/load, it is the cats. sometimes they will act up with the old hammer test, but not always.

I hear a rattle at idle, in gear.
Hardly any rattle in N or P.
As soon as I accelerate, it goes away.
Don't know what else to do, since I documented it.

The reason for documenting a problem like this is, so it will be repaired at a later date, but still under warranty.
If the noise can be duplicated when in D at idle, why does somebody not get under the car & track down the sound ?
