Yikes! What's this piece I found next to my car!!!
 

:eek: I found this part next to my car this morning on the ground. It is rubber and has 3 small holes on one side and a large offset hole on the other. It has a flange like it fits into a sheet metal hole. The part number is 123 99729 81 and probably came off the '94 wagon. I tried looking it up but it wasn't there.

This says its a grommet, at sill for a w123.

123 99729 81 - From my experience on this forum, the first 3 numbers listed refers to the car...in this case a 123.

Your car is probably a 124 (94 E320wagon). My guess is that the previous owner pulled a "MacGiver" on your car...assuming you're not the original owner.

I agree with you about the 123 prefix. Looking at it more closely it might be a grommet that brings three wires through the fire wall and into a cable 'trunk' to somewhere on the engine. No sign of water stains meaning it isn't a drain for something. Maybe it isn't even from my car as the winds around here lately have been very high and this part doesn't weigh much. It could've blown into my yard.

It sounds like a drain tube from the trunk/spare tire area, or possibly from the rocker panel area.

I wouldn't discount that it came from your car simply because of the "123" prefix in the part number. Very often a part from a previous chassis will work just fine on a later chassis and the part number will simply be extended to the next chassis. So a firewall grommet for example which was originally designed for a 123 chassis, which will work just fine on a 124 chassis, will be used on the 124, but retain the 123 part number prefix.

Thanks Gilly. The more I look at it, the more I think RPM55 is on the right track. If it was a firewall item I would think it would be torn or something because what happened to the wires that fed through it? There is a slight stain ring on the 3 hole side too. Also - I've been swapping my snow tires off and on with the forecast (idiot weathermen!) so maybe it happened as I was changing tires.

Is the large hole also angled? If so it sounds to me to be one of the drain outlets that fits into the sills. From memory there are four on W124s, W201s, etc. These things seem to come off easily like each of the four jacking pads at each end of each sill. It is not uncommon to see one or more jacking pads or drain grommets missing.

When you look at the EPC of a W124 (as most of the other MB's I guess) you'll find all kinds of part numbers : 110, 115, 116, 126,
123, even 124 and yes also 007. That last number don't mean your W124 092 has connections to James Bond ( who knows! )!
In fact "997" and "81" makes it indeed a rubber grommet.
"29" makes me believe you should find it under the hood but...
where ?
