How do you clear an SRS light

What type of scanner do you need to clear the SRS light on a 94 C280? It came on when I removed the air bag and turned the ignition to the on position. I should have disconnected the battery.

Will one of those $150 scanners at Sears or TrakAuto work?

Or do you have to use one of those $2000 and up models?

If you have names of the ones you can use to clear the codes, please mention them. Thanks.

SRS light clearing?

Try disconnecting the battery again. The light should clear on restart if things are working. If it stays on, something fried. It takes the expensive scanner to reset things.

The memory in SRS stays through battery disconnects.

Yes, you will need a real scanner not a tinker toy. Too bad Snap-On's MB module doesn't do SRS, their BMW and VW/Audi modules do give SRS and other body functions. I imagine Snap-On will do MBs in the future so keep an eye out as even though they are $3-4k new they can be regularly had for 2-500 on ebay.

Probably the cheapest of the available used scanners that would do MB SRS is the AST retriever. This one is currently for sale on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2467030539&category=43989

The other long time professional tool is the Baum CS2000. See this one on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2468514955&category=43989

He is asking too much though. The cs2000 has been replaced by Iscan and they do use the same modules but the new unit has a larger screen and can graph values. The older version cs2000 should be available around 2k I would think.

I sold my AST for a grand about two years ago. I keep my cs2000 untill I decide whether to buy the factory Porsche module or the newlly released Baum Porsche module. So far I have only needed OBDII functions on Porsches newer than my old Porsche factory tool was replaced in 1996. I can do airbags on Porsche currently to only 1996. I am waiting for Porsche's new tool to be released to make the decision. The question is do I spend 10k or so on the real tool and sell my cs2000 for 2k and avoid the 1.5k Baum module. The difference is $6.5k

Thanks for the info, Steve

Just thought of something. The SRS light being activated (by turning the ignition switch to "on" when the bag was disconnected) doesn't disable any of the airbag system, does it? It's just a light, right?

I can perhaps understand that MB wants to be cautious in allowing anybody to clear the SRS light, but I want to be sure that it doesn't extend to disabling anything as I won't be able to get the light cleared immediately.

I'm probably overthinking this.

If the SRS light is "on" all the time, the airbags will NOT work!!

Thanks, Gilly!

I suppose I wasn't overthinking this then. I will get the SRS light reset as soon as I can. That will reactivate everything?

Gilly 03-24-2004 03:42 PM

Yes, it'll be fine then. Assuming there is no current fault, just a stored one. My understanding is that certain problems will set codes and not go away until cleared with a computer. Other codes aren't as important and the light will eventually go away by themselves.

SRS light wont turn off

Hello Guys! I need your help on this one. Before, after I start my engine the SRS would normally turn on and then off after a minute or less. A few months back I noticed that through the same process the SRS light wont turn off until maybe after 5 to 10minutes. Then lately it wont turn off totally. What could be the cause? Thanks for your help guys!
