92 300e auto tranny service

100,000 miles, and tranny shifts with a lot more " clunks" even when warm. I have had to add fluid lately as well. I want to have a pro`s opinion / and adjust / clean / whatever is neccesary. Do I play it safe and have the dealer look at it.....or is a reputable Transmission shop the way to go.

Do a Trans service, filter and fluid, also drain the torque converter. MB has transmission fluid to minimize harsh engagements I do not remember the part number. If you do the service yourself turn the engine in the direction of engine rotation only when you line up the Torque converter. To remove the TC and pan plug use a 5mm Allen.

How much fluid have you had to add to it and are there any external leaks? There may be the possibility that the fluid is getting past the vaccum modulator.

Ali, Thanks for your reply I`ve added only 3/4 litre ( 1/2 quart ) ounce. No external leaks visible.

You are saying it clunks when shifting? Can be describe what happends in a bit more detail? Does the clunk sound come from the center of the car or the rear?

Hassman, all these trannys shift hard when cold....so did this one, the "clunk" is a heavy, hard, sound, usually from 1st into 2nd, sometimes from 2dn to 3rd, and is in the tranny area. Thanks

I am familiar with these trans. The 300e used to do the same, especially when cold. Really started to piss me off .... I then drained the ATF (and converter), changed the filter, added Synthetic ATF which helped, but it wasn't until I backed off the transmission vacuum modulator valve that it was much better.

Hassman, interesting to hear you say you changed to synthetic ATF....I`ve heard good things about the Red Line Product line, any comments ?

haasman 03-23-2004 12:28 AM

I have not used the Redline ATF but have used some of their other products and all seem excellent. I read on this site that their differential lube does quiet noisey ones. I also used their diesel fuel additives and was very pleased with it.

Hassman, many thanks for your input....I will be doing a tranny service...and change to Redline ATF, and Differential lube.
