380SL Smog Pump

Can anyone tell me the purpose of the smog pump (aka air polution pump on an SL (or probably all MBs). Mine is making a noise (unknown whether it's the clutch or pump itself) and the darn things are rather pricy just to replace. Just curious, thanks.
