W140 coupe, removing front speakers

How do you remove the speaker cover in a W140? You don't have to take the dashboard appart, do you?!

between the speaker and the glas is a small 1/2" wide 4" long strip of plastic. this just pops off. under this is a phillips screw - you will need a VERY short screwdriver toget this off. i think thats it....

caveat emptor and all that. be careful

Yep, that's how the dash speakers come out... probably a right angle phillips head screwdriver is best once the trim panel is out.
These speakers are used only for the phone...
Hope this helps.

I can confirm this as I inspected these speakers once when I heard a crackling, popping sound front side speakers and thought they were these dash speakers. I after fixing an amplifier (in the trunk) problem, the popping sound was gone. Never did hear any sound coming out of the dash speakers, even though it seems it is should be coming from there, but the quality sound system is so balanced, when in fact no sound does come from these speakers, thus being phone related seem correct, although my euro model 93 600SEL, had the phone system and still had a small speaker associated with the phone assembly mounted on left passenger foot area panel (was not the in dash phone system which uses the dash speakers we assume).
thanks.

dash speakers

If you had the factory phone, the speakers were installed on either side of the dash and did provide the audio for the phone. They are referenced in a install bulletin and the wires are in the rear fender, you are probably correct for euro versions.
There are eleven speakers out of a seven channel amp, two each in front doors, one each rear door, two pair (2 ohm) in parrallel rear package shelf (bass), one tweeter behind the rearview mirror. I contemplated hooking up the phone speakers, but after the "bose" amp went south, $600 I am not fooling with anything.
