Power steering fluid leak (w210)

Hi,
My 96 E230's power steering fluid is leaking.
Went to some MB shops but they suggested to change the whole steering box!! The leak is really not that strong and I have been living with it for almost a year.
Can oil seals be replaced?
Thanks.

MB STARS 04-13-2004 11:19 PM

In your country E230 is steering gear box or steering rack? in US all 210 use steering rack usually is fitting O ring leaking at steering rack easy fix.

edl100 04-14-2004 12:42 AM

Hi,
My mistake. it is a steering rack. I guess all W210s use the same system?
Here, They want to replace the entire thing. No-repair for the benz dealers. I guess I should go to another shop who can do this repair.
Is it a tricky thing to do? What do they need to know to remove this steering rack?

Thanks.

MB STARS 04-15-2004 12:20 PM

No you can replace O ring without removeing steering rack.

Thanks MBSTARS

Here in the Philippines, There is no competent independent repairshops for European Cars. Only the dealers and some shops who charge exhorbitantly.

Repairshops would want to replace everything than find a simple solution.
Thanks.

mbz shop

ISn't there a shop on Quezon Blvd near the Old Ford dealership used to be?( by the a big church)?.. This was back in the late 80's . We took our w123 coupe there and they are good in searching for fixes, not replacements. I don't know if they are still there though. Sorry for the vague description. Good Luck

sorry, but i know that there are lot of quality shops in MM that specializes in european cars including MBs. What's wrong with Universal Motors. I bought my first MB from them in the 70's, are they still around?

btw, don't forget to vote for FPJ!!

?

To a2aa:
Hi, I'm surprised you know the Philippines! Yes that still shop still exists. I think you are referring to Ronas. The shop is like a time warp. It still looks the same way back in the 70's when they were popular. Today, they are not really that good since the real competent mechanics resigned already.

To joel:
Hi, I'm also surprised you know the Phils. Benz is still distributed by the same company. Although they changed the name already. The dealer do service the car but they cost so much for simple repairs. \

P.I.

edl100,

yes I grew up in Quezon City- went to school in Ateneo.
We used to go to Ronas for quality work on our w!23 coupe.
I'll ask my friends who has MBZ's to look around for reputable and practical shops so that you can take your car there as well.
While looking for shops, why don't you inspect the hoses. My 86 560sl had a leaking PS system and the hoses were both faulty. Usually the high pressure goes first due to the obvious. But the low pressure clamps sometimes gets loose and starts leaking. I would look at the hoses first and make sure that it's not them causing you all the heart burn ;) Good Luck

joel,

I haven't been keeping myself updated on the political side of the Philippines, but are you talking about the actor , FPJ? Running for what??? Hopefully not for the president position......

edl100 04-20-2004 07:41 PM

To a2aa

To a2aa: I guess you haven't had any news about the Philippines for a long time.
FPJ the actor is indeed running for President of the country. It is really funny indeed since he never even graduated High school and never had any political experience. He is like another Erap estrada.
Anyway, going back to Mercedes, The Mercedes Club phils is not much of a help to me since majority owns older benzes such as those W123s which is actually a very simple benz to maintain as compared to the newer electronic ones.

Thanks.

Oh god...why do people let bad things happen to them again and again....based on history, an uneducated person can't run a country just because he thinks he can. Politics is an educated man's world... NOT AN ACTION STAR WANNA BE> sorry

I know 2 people from the MBZ club manila... Ray sison who has a mint w123 230E and Giby Yalung 190E with an 18rg toyota engine.( How do you like that?) Both former classmates from ADM.
They should be able to assist you as well to find other sources of MBZ repair and parts bins. Good luck .

I know first hand I voted for one. Living in Mnpls. Minnesota I had the chance to vote for Jesse Ventura for Governor and I took it. My idea was to buck (change?) history by finding a non-career politician who could really change things up. Well the Libertarian did what all politician do, spend as much as possible so as to make everyone like you.
Having bailed out on that deficit, last wk. he was on national news considering running for Pres. Well it's HIS history which will haunt him on that one. I wouldn't want the world snickering at my vote again. It was worth a try though.

a2aa 04-21-2004 05:19 PM

Amen!!!! Atleast you learned a lesson. In this case, the previous Actor-turned-politician-turned President IS IN JAIL!!!! So now let's elect another wanna-be??? No highschool education, can't speak english. He's trying to "Rambo" his way in....

joel 04-22-2004 01:52 AM

ed: i think your best bet is to invest in quality tools, and do it yourself which is what this forum is all about.

a2: i am confident that the ex-pres. in jail, has received his first formal and fundamental education from the same school you say you came from -ADM. No atenean bashing intended.

cheers, Joel

prayers

Joel,

Bingo!!! That's why he got elected in the first place. You pulled the words out of my mouth...Very unsanitary.

Although nobody is perfect, we do learn from past mistakes. And hopefully, with logical and intelligent choices, we won't have to rely solely on prayers.

Good luck to you. Now we must go back to MBZ repair
