Will changing the oil myself every 3k miles mess up the service interval monitor in my car? Right now at almost 900 odometer miles it reads 9200 miles left until first service (service A). Any shared wisdom here?

There are many threads here debating the frequency of oil changes. However, changing the oil yourself will not mess up anything. You can reset the service indicator yourself after the oil change. The instructions are in your owner's manual.

Mark,
My advice, don't drive any car 10,000 miles between changes, regardless of what a computer tells you. I'm glad that you can reset the system yourself. We often do oil changes before the fss is at the limit. We do not reset the fss though. In addition to oil changes A and B services involve changing fresh air filters, tire rotations, etc., and shoould be performed at the normal fss intervals.

Mark,
I would like to second leitztech's comments. You shouldn't reset the FSS as it will effect the overall maintainance schedule. Even if you don't reset it, it will increment slightly as a result of changing the oil. I changed the oil in my ML to Mobil 1 after the first 400 miles and will replace the oil and filter at 4K mile intervals. If you're not going to keep the car past 100K miles or so, you can go with the FSS schedule and skip using Mobil 1.... As Larry says: Change oil hot and change oil often ...tracy |
